MANILA, Philippines — The Department of National Defense (DND) on Tuesday signed an agreement with a Korean electrical company for the development of solar power projects in select facilities nationwide.

According to the DND in a statement, the signed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the DND and Korea Electrical Safety Corporation (KESCO) ensures the implementation of solar power in some DND agencies.

KESCO is a government corporation under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Government of the Republic of Korea (MOTIE-ROK) in Seoul, South Korea.

The selected DND agencies include Camp General Macario Peralta Jr, Jamindan, Capiz in Central Visayas and Camp Kibaritan, Kalilangan, Bukidnon in Mindanao, with initial rated capacity of 50 and 100 megawatts, respectively.

“Today’s activity goes hand-in-hand with the global initiative to shift toward green energy and economy to drastically decrease harm against the planet,” said DND Secretary Delfin Lorenzana during the signing of the agreement.

“To strengthen the energy competitiveness of the Philippines, we hope that both governments will join together to continue to support the success of this partnership,” KESCO president Jihyun Park also said.

The new agreement is also in accordance with the existing memorandum of understanding between the Philippines and the MOTIE-ROK on the Expansion of the Renewable Energy Deployment, signed during the state visit of President Rodrigo Duterte in Korea on June 4, 2018.
