MANILA, Philippines — For promoting the financial literacy of Filipinos while bringing about positive change in the communities she works with, SmarTrade president and chief executive officer (CEO) Joyce Ann Mayo was given the “Hero of the Year” award by the Women of Global Change (WGC), an international nonprofit and social-impact organization, and Aspire Magazine Global.
The award is bestowed on individuals and organizations that embody a strong social responsibility and implement humanitarian works.
“A hero is a person that is brave, loving, dedicated and inspirational. Joyce Mayo displays all of those qualities,” said WGC Philippine representative Rey Allen Castillo.
Mayo is a businesswoman who has long been helping Filipinos and continues to inspire people worldwide through SmarTrade and her other ventures, Castillo said, adding:
“She uses her knowledge and heart for the better good of people, making her a true hero.”
Positive change
For Mayo, “business is not purely business.”
“We have to do whatever is within our power to influence positive change in the communities we work with and the people we interact with. Each of us has a responsibility to make this place a better world today and for generations to come,” she said.
With Mayo at its helm, SmarTrade has trained more than 20,000 Filipinos in financial literacy for the past five years. It provides Filipinos free learning sessions and personalized coaching on how to be financially adept and make better investments for themselves and their families.
WGC is a network of business leaders and entrepreneurs working in global business, promoting the belief that every human being has the right to clean water, food, health care, education, and income training beyond race, creed, religion and circumstance.
Aspire Magazine Global is aimed at all sizes, ages, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations.
