MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) logged four volcanic tremors at the Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours.
In its 8 a.m. bulletin issued Wednesday, Phivolcs said that the tremors lasted for two to five minutes.
“In the past 24-hour period, the Taal Volcano Network recorded four (4) volcanic tremor events having durations of two (2) to five (5) minutes and low-level background tremor has persisted since March 29, 2022,” the agency said.
It added that the activity at the Taal main crater “was dominated by upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in its lake which generated plumes 1,500 meters tall that drifted southwest.”
The volcano emitted an average of 4,474 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Tuesday.
Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 3 or magmatic unrest which means that there is a “magmatic intrusion at the Main Crater that may further drive succeeding eruptions.”
Phivolcs renewed its call to residents of Taal Volcano Island and barangays of Bilibinwang, Banyaga, Boso-boso, Gulod, and eastern Bugaan East to evacuate due to potential hazards of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami should stronger eruptions occur.
So far, over 3,000 individuals are in evacuation centers amid the volcano’s unrest, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported Tuesday.
