Magnitude 5.4 quake jolts Cagayan

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.4 earthquake jolted Cagayan and nearby provinces late Wednesday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake struck at 8:03 p.m. and its epicenter was located 20 kilometers northeast of Aparri, Cagayan, according to Phivolcs.

It also said the temblor was of tectonic origin and had a depth of focus of only nine kilometers.

Intensity III was recorded in Gonzaga, Cagayan; Intensity II in Claveria, Cagayan and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; and Intensity I in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

Phivolcs said no damage caused by the earthquake is expected, but aftershocks are possible.
