MANILA, Philippines — Aside from nuclear power, presidential candidate Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Sunday said there should also be a strong push for more renewable energy plants.

A week after the Philippines and the United States signed an agreement on nuclear energy cooperation, Marcos reiterated his proposal to develop other clean and renewable energy sources, like hydropower, geothermal, wind and solar.

“Our mission for our country is to have sufficient, reliable, and affordable electricity for all,” he said. “A large part of every Filipino’s salary goes to electricity bills. What do we need to do to lower the price of our electricity?”

He earlier said the country should have at least one nuclear power plant and cited a 2019 Social Weather Stations Survey, saying that 79 percent of Filipinos agree with the rehabilitation of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant while 65 percent wanted to construct new power plants.
