MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc will review the campaign guidelines following the loosened COVID-19 restrictions in the country, Commissioner George Garcia revealed on Thursday.

Garcia particularly cited the newly-formed Comelec Campaign Committee (CCC) under the Comelec Resolution 10730 which was promulgated in November 2021.

“Napag-usapan kahapon na yung Comelec Campaign Committee ay atin po yang ire-review,” Garcia told reporters in an ambush interview in the Comelec office.

(The en banc has decided that we will review the Comelec Campaign Committee.)

“Kailangan nang i-revisit, sapagkat noong ginawa ‘yung Comelec Resolution 10730… ay panahon kung saan napakataas ng ating COVID cases, dahil in fairness naman po bumababa na ang kaso,” he continued.

(We need to revisit that because the Comelec Resolution 10730 was created when the country was experiencing high COVID-19 cases, and in fairness, cases here have been decreasing.)

The CCC is tasked to approve or disapprove applications for the conduct of election campaigns, among other tasks.

Political aspirants should seek a permit from CCC and the local government units at the same time.

When asked if there’s enough time to recalibrate the resolution, Garcia answered in the affirmative.

“Oo, In fact yan ay mamadaliin natin. We call that recalibration, we will have to recalibrate itong mga ganito.

(Yes, in fact we will fast track that. We call that recalibration, we will recalibrate these things.)
