MANILA, Philippines —“Everyone’s lawyer” George Garcia is “really qualified” for his new position as a Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner given his experience as an election lawyer, Senator Panfilo Lacson said.

“Si Atty. George Garcia, abogado ng lahat, [Atty. George Garcia is everyone’s lawyer],” Lacson said when asked if he was also a previous client of the new Comelec commissioner.

Garcia reportedly said Lacson was among his past clients.

“Minsan magkalaban nga sa korte, magkapareho pala siyang abugado ng magkabila [Sometimes those from opposing sides, they have the same lawyer],” Lacson said in jest.

“Pero qualification wise, talagang qualified kasi ang tagal na niyang election lawyer [But qualification wise, he is really qualified because he has been an election lawyer for a long time],” he went on.

Before Garcia was appointed to one of the recently vacated Comelec commissioner posts, he was the lawyer who represented Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in his 2016 VP electoral protest.

He also represented Senator Grace Poe in her citizenship case before the Supreme Court.

Garcia assured he will be inhibiting in the cases of his former clients.
