MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Saturday vowed to make the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) like the Silicon Valley, a center of technological innovation in California, if he were to win the presidency.
Moreno said the government should make use of the BNPP facility but not as a nuclear power site.

“One, ‘yung nuclear power plant sa Bataan, gagawin ko siyang Silicon Valley, kasi sayang naman, pag-aari ng gobyerno. Let’s make use of it but not for creating power source via nuclear kasi kawawa ang mga taga-Bataan,” he said in an interview with reporters.
(I will make the nuclear power plant in Bataan like the Silicon Valley, because it would be a waste not to use it as government property. Let’s make use of it but not for creating power source via nuclear because the people of Bataan may be harmed.)
“Hindi pa ako naniniwala sa panahon natin ngayon na tayo ay masinop o mainam mag-alaga ng ganoong uri ng delikadong pasilidad,” he added.
(I don’t believe that we are capable of maintaining this kind of harmful facility at this point.)
Moreno said the country should refrain from using nuclear power for now because we still have other sources of energy.
“So gamitin muna natin ‘yung (Let us just use) available technology na mas (that are) safe, renewable, and sustainable,” he said.
“With regard to nuclear power plant sa (in) Bataan, ginastusan na ‘yun ng gobyerno, hindi naman nagagamit (the government already paid for its construction but it is not being used). Mukhang matibay ‘yun (It seems sturdy) not for nuclear power source but for another means. We will make use of it to create more jobs in the province of Bataan,” he added.
