Pagasa: Expect cloudy skies, rain in Luzon, Visayas due to 'amihan', shear line

MANILA, Philippines — Luzon and Visayas may experience overcast skies and rain on Thursday due to the northeast monsoon, locally known as “amihan,” and the shear line or a tail-end of a cold front.

This was the forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), which said the northeast monsoon will affect Northern and Central Luzon while the shear line will affect the eastern portion of Southern Luzon and the Visayas.

“Dahil dito asahan ang maulap na kalangitan na may pag-ulan sa malaking bahagi ng Bisayas at gano’n din sa Luzon,” said Pagasa weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio.

(Because of this, expect cloudy skies and rains in most parts of Visayas and Luzon.)

The shear line will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and Davao Region, Pagasa said, warning that possible flash floods or landslides may occur in these areas due to moderate to at times heavy rains.

Overcast skies with light rains, on the other hand, are expected over Cagayan Valley, Apayao, and Aurora due to the northeast monsoon, which is also expected to cause partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains over Ilocos Region, the rest of Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Central Luzon.

But these weather conditions will not have any significant impact in these areas, according to Pagasa.

As for Metro Manila and the rest of the country, the state weather service said partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains due to localized thunderstorms will occur and could even cause flash floods or landslides.

Meanwhile, Pagasa’s forecast temperature range in key cities/areas across the country for Thursday is the following:

Pagasa further said Northern and Central Luzon are expected to have moderate to strong winds in the northeast direction with moderate to rough sea conditions while moderate to strong winds from northeast to east will prevail over the eastern sections of Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, coupled with moderate to rough coastal waters.

The rest of the country, it added, will experience light to moderate winds in the northeast direction and slight to moderate sea conditions.
