Palace condoles with family, colleagues of ex-press secretary Dong Puno

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Tuesday expressed its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of veteran broadcaster and former Press Secretary Ricardo “Dong” Puno Jr., who was recognized for his “intelligent and insightful interviews.”

Cabinet Secretary and acting presidential spokesman Karlo Nograles described Puno as a “respected member of the media” before and after serving under the administration of former President Joseph Estrada.

“Known for his intelligent, insightful interviews, Sec. Puno received numerous distinctions for his work in public affairs programs that helped provide the public with a better understanding of the issues of the day,” Nograles said in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with the loved ones of Sec. Puno as we join them in praying for his eternal repose,” he added.

Puno reportedly died on Tuesday due to a lingering disease. He was 76.

Puno had served as ABS-CBN’s senior vice president and was known as the host of several shows in ABS-CBN including Dong Puno Live and Insider.

He served as the press secretary of former President Joseph Estrada, before running for senator in the 2001 elections. He lost in that election and returned to his position in ABS-CBN.

In 2015, Puno was reported to be suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
