MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday registered 8,361 more cases of COVID-19, as well as 18,431 new recoveries, which decreased the active cases slightly to 126,227.
This marks the sixth consecutive day the Philippines logged less than 10,000 cases during the latest COVID-19 surge believed to be caused by the more transmissible Omicron variant.
This is also the ninth day in a row the country marked higher daily recoveries than infections starting Feb. 1, amid, however, a lower testing rate. The number of new cases peaked on Jan. 15, hitting 39,004 new cases.
Based on the DOH’s report, 79 percent or 6,568 of the new infections were logged within the last 14 days with NCR listed as the top region posting the highest number of new cases at 863 new cases (13 percent) in the recent two weeks, followed by Region 11 with 683 (10 percent) and Region 6 with 657 (10 percent).
Positivity rate, meanwhile, is at 21.5 percent out of the 38,675 tests conducted on Feb. 4.
With this, total confirmed infections now sit at 3,609,568 and recoveries at 3,428,815.
Of the 126,227 active cases, DOH said 96.2 percent currently suffer mild or asymptomatic cases; specifically, 116,598 individuals suffer mild cases, 4,864 are asymptomatic, 3,008 moderate, 1,447 severe, and 310 critical.
The DOH said it also recorded the deaths of 312 people, increasing the total COVID-19 death count to 54,526.
The health agency likewise said that 264 duplicates were removed from the total case count, 194 of which were recoveries.
Moreover, the DOH said that 243 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.
