MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Leila de Lima on Wednesday appealed for prayers after her mother tested positive for COVID-19 and was in critical condition.

“My 89-year old Mom, who tested positive for COVID-19 three weeks ago, is now in critical condition in our local hospital in Iriga City. Her cardio-pulmonary systems [are] now failing. I ask for prayers,” she wrote in a letter from Camp Crame.

“Please God…” she added.

De Lima, a former justice secretary, has been in jail for almost five years for drug charges that her camp said were “trumped up.”

She is seeking reelection in the 2022 national elections.
