A woman who was raped or a young girl impregnated by her relative has no right to abort the unborn and must learn to live with the consequences of being a victim, according to Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso.

The Aksyon Demokratiko standard-bearer took a hard-line position against abortion during an interview aired on ABS-CBN platforms on Thursday night, saying he was against it even under extreme circumstances involving sexual abuse or incest.

During the interview with TV host Boy Abunda, Domagoso compared the situation of rape or incest victims to the poverty he experienced in his youth and how he rose above it, suggesting women or girls should do the same.

“That’s life. I didn’t choose to be a garbage picker. I didn’t want to eat other people’s leftovers. But that’s what destiny bestowed on me. I forced myself to persevere. I forced myself to overcome adversity, so society will recognize me as a decent person,” he said in Filipino. —DJ Yap
