Journal editor-in-chief, sportswriter Gus Villanueva dies at 83

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine Journalists Inc. (PJI) editor-in-chief and former Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) president Augusto “Gus” Villanueva passed away Friday at the age of 83.

Villanueva started his career as a sportswriter in 1955 at the age of 17 before becoming editor of the Times Journal in 1972.

He was also among the founding brains behind the People’s Journal and People’s Tonight which were established in 1978 and 1979, respectively.

In the late 70s, Villanueva also served as the president of the PSA and was later on honored by the association with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Never did he spend a day outside the office. Almost all his life had been devoted to closing his most cherished papers and tabloids. When not editing or writing stories, Villanueva was busy being a Good Samaritan to friends and strangers in need,” the Journal Group of Publications said.

“Villanueva was everybody’s man. All people from all walks of life saluted him as the quintessential editor-in-chief,” it added.

Villanueva’s family said his remains will be cremated and kept at home. The date of inurnment will be announced later.
