PH hits new record high with 34,021 new COVID-19 cases

MANILA, Philippines — The country registered 34,021 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, said the Department of Health (DOH), further raising active cases to 237,387.

This is the fourth time the country has recorded its record-number of daily cases this month, slightly beating the previous record’s 33,169.

Based on the DOH’s report, 98 percent or 33,456 of the new infections were logged within the last 14 days. It showed that Metro Manila is once again the top region that posted the highest number of new cases at 16,793 new cases (50 percent) in the recent two weeks, followed by Region 4-A with 7,131 (21 percent) and Region 3 with 3,745 (11 percent).

This bring the total confirmed cases to 3,092,409

Positivity rate, on the other hand, almost nears 50 percent, at 47.9 percent out of the 78,866 tests conducted on Jan. 11.

Of the active cases, DOH said 98 percent currently suffer mild or asymptomatic cases, specifically, 225,408 individuals suffer mild cases, 7,332 are asymptomatic, 2,881 moderate, 1,468 severe, and 298 critical.

Meanwhile, the DOH said it also recorded the recovery of 4,694 patients, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,802,286, as well as the deaths of 82 coronavirus-hit people increasing the total death count to 52,736.

The health department, however, said that 7 labs were unable to send data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System on the tests performed on Jan. 11.

“Based on data in the last 14 days, the 7 labs contribute, on average, 5.0% of samples tested and 6.6% of positive individuals,” the DOH said.

The health agency likewise said that 246 duplicates were removed from the total case count, 180 of which were recoveries.

Moreover, the DOH said that 44 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.
