On December 22, the IPHO listed only nine active COVID-19 cases, the lowest single-day tally in 2021.

As of January 7, out of 41 municipalities in the province, the towns with active virus carriers jumped to 32 from only six on December 27.

At least five health care workers (HCW) at the provincial government-run Quezon Medical Center (QMC) here contracted COVID-19.

“And more are waiting for their test results,” Dr. Rolando Padre, QMC director, told the Inquirer Friday morning.

“The infected HCWs are all fully vaccinated and are under home quarantine,” Padre said.

Governor Danilo Suarez has called on all residents to have the vaccine for protection amid the ongoing threat of the highly contagious Omicron variant.

“More vaccines will arrive. Get the jab for your protection as well as the safety of your loved ones,” Suarez said.

A total of 1,528,427 residents in Quezon province have been vaccinated against COVID-19, the provincial public information office (PIO) reported Friday.

Citing the latest IPHO report, the PIO said 706,895 residents have been fully vaccinated while 821,532 residents have received their first dose.

The province needs to fully vaccinate at least 1,560,568 of its population of 2,229,383 (2020 census including Lucena City) to achieve herd immunity against SARS-Cov2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Lucena City will be placed under Alert Level 3 from January 9 to 15 while the rest of the province will remain under Alert Level 2.
