MANILA, Philippines — Eighty-seven percent of faculty members of higher education institutions (HEIs) and nearly 60 percent of tertiary students have been vaccinated against COVID-19, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said.

“The Commission is happy to report that in many regions of the country, the vaccination rate of our education frontliners have reached herd immunity levels ensuring not only their availability to join face-to-face classes but more importantly, they are helping protect their families and communities from the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus,” CHED Chairperson Prospero De Vera said in a statement Thursday night.

According to CHED, reports from HEIs across the country showed that 87.1 percent of faculty and employees have been vaccinated against coronavirus as of December 29.

This is higher compared to the 72 percent vaccination rate as of October.

CHED said this means that 255,229 personnel have been vaccinated out of the 293,058 teaching and non-teaching staff in HEIs all over the country,

Among the regions that posted the highest vaccination rate for HEI personnel are the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) at 95.24 percent, Central Luzon at 94.08 percent, Cagayan Valley at 93.78 percent, and Davao Region at 92.16 percent.

Meanwhile, the vaccination rate for tertiary students also increased from 46 percent to 59.7 percent.

CHED said that 2,456,667 have been vaccinated out of 4,115,988 tertiary students in the country.

The agency noted that 43.2 percent are fully vaccinated while 16.42 percent are partially vaccinated.

Among the regions that recorded the most number of vaccinated students are Zamboanga Peninsula at 85.38 percent, Central Luzon at 81.12 percent, and CAR at 75.65 percent.

De Vera said that CHED regional offices, HEIs, and their partner local government units will expand their efforts to help education stakeholders get booster shots in the first quarter of 2022 to facilitate the expansion of face-to-face classes and help combat COVID-19 variants.
