Marikina gives shoemakers tax relief

MANILA, Philippines — Shoemakers and manufacturers of leather goods in the country’s shoe capital can avail of discounts from business tax and permit fees for five years after Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro approved a tax relief ordinance on Tuesday.

Under City Ordinance No. 110, manufacturers of footwear and leather goods who will get business licenses will have their taxes waived upon application.

In the second year of operation, they can get a 75-percent discount on business tax due; in the third year, 60 percent; and in the fourth year, 50 percent. Businesses that are currently operating are entitled to a 50-percent discount for five years.
