MANILA, Philippines — Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner Rowena Guanzon on Sunday rebuked Victor Rodriguez, the official spokesperson of presidential hopeful former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., for telling the poll body to assert its independence.

Guanzon made the reaction after Rodriguez issued a statement saying it’s high time that the Comelec assert its independence in dealing with several petitions versus Marcos Jr., which he called “rubbish.

“Who is that lawyer who said we Comelec commissioners must assert our independence? Bakit, lampa ba kami [Why? Are we wimpy]?” Guanzon said in a Twitter post.

“Atty. Rodriguez, don’t you diminish us,” she added.

INQUIRER.net contacted Rodriguez for comment, but he has yet to respond as of posting.

Guanzon also told lawyers involved in petitions versus Marcos Jr. to “shut up,” saying that the cases against him are still “pendente lite” or is awaiting litigation.

Marcos Jr. is currently facing six cases before the Comelec challenging his bid to run for president.

Two cases seek to cancel his certificate of candidacy, along with four other disqualification cases.

Comelec recently junked a petition to consider Marcos Jr. as a nuisance candidate.
