DepEd to review allotted time for face-to-face classes

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) said that they will review the time allotted for face-to-face classes as teachers noted that it was too short to maximize.

In an interview with One News’ The Chiefs on Tuesday, Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said that time allotted for kindergarten students is three hours and four hours for higher grade levels up to senior high school.

“Based on our feedback from the teachers and the schools—because we have a monitoring and evaluation tool reporting every week—one observation they have is that the time that we allotted for the face-to-face classes is just too short to maximize,” he said.

“This is something that we will review, with respect to the time allotment, with our counterparts in the DOH (Department of Health). This will be one of our agenda,” the undersecretary added.

Malaluan raised another issue that the DepEd is facing, which is the simultaneous conduct of face-to-face classes and distance learning.

“One other concern is that, now, the teachers have to deal with the face-to-face and the distance learning all at the same time,” he said.

“Although, most of our teachers and the students and parents welcome this, there are also certain adjustments that have to be made from one, from pure distance learning modality to one that blends it with the physical,” said Malaluan.

The pilot run of the limited face-to-face classes started on November 15 with an initial 100 public schools.
