TUMAUINI, Isabela—A 33-year-old policeman in Tumauini town, Isabela province escaped death after he managed to jump out of his burning car before it exploded, police said on Tuesday.

Staff Sergeant Dave Heinrich Utanis of the 1st Isabela Provincial Mobile Force Company was driving his car but lost control of it when he tried to overtake another vehicle, said Fire Inspector Nestor Parallag, acting Tumauini municipal fire marshal.

Utanis’ car crashed into a road barricade that damaged its front wheel.

Investigators said the car burst into flames, but Utanis jumped out of it before it exploded.
