MANILA, Philippines — Active cases or the number of people still sick due to COVID-19 have been decreasing in the last three days as the total stood at 50,152 as of Wednesday.

This as the Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,218 new infections, which was also lower than the cases reported since Sunday.

According to DOH, 73.4 percent of the active cases were mild while 6.8 percent were asymptomatic, 11.02 percent were moderate, 6.2 percent were severe, and 2.6 percent were critical.

The tally of active cases, it added, accounts for just 1.8 percent of the 2,768,849 infections recorded in the country since 2020.

The health agency likewise reported the recovery of 6,660 more COVID patients, raising total recoveries to 2,676,349, as well as the death of 271 others, increasing the toll to 42,348 as of October 28.

Meanwhile, nationwide positivity rate was at 7.6 percent of the 41,049 individuals tested for the COVID-causing SARS-CoV-2 virus on Monday, the DOH said.

As for COVID beds utilization, the DOH said 51 percent of intensive care unit beds, 40 percent of isolation beds, 36 percent of ward beds, and 34 percent of ventilators are currently being occupied.

Moreover, the health agency noted that only one testing laboratory was not able to submit its data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System, and that it removed 41 duplicate cases, including 37 recoveries, from the total case count while another 227 recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.

The Philippines is now classified as low risk for COVID-19, according to the DOH. However, health authorities remind the public to be always on guard and to continue observing health protocols despite the decline in new coronavirus infections.

On October 24, the country’s active cases stood at 60,957, including the recorded 5,279 new cases. On October 25, active cases were at 57,763, including 4,405 new cases. On October 26, active cases reached 53,642, including 4,393 new infections.

According to OCTA Research, the country may have only less than 2,000 new COVID-19 cases per day by the end of November if the trend in new infections continues.
