Cooler days ahead as monsoon season sets in

MANILA, Philippines — Expect cooler days and rainfall in the coming months, the country’s weather agency said on Monday, as it marked the onset of the monsoon season.

In a statement, Vicente Malano, deputy administrator of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), said the northeast wind flow was “expected to gradually become more dominant over Northern Luzon,” and would bring in cold and dry air in the coming months.

This also explains why northeastern parts of Luzon have been recording cooler surface air temperatures in recent weeks, he added.

“Surges of cold temperatures may also be expected in the coming months,” Malano said.

Even so, the state weather agency also warned that the ongoing La Niña could enhance monsoon rainfalls that can trigger flash floods and rain-induced landslides over susceptible areas.

Historically, the last quarter of the year brings in the strongest typhoons of the year as well.

As such, Pagasa enjoins all local government agencies to take precautionary measures against such calamities. INQ
