MRT train coach catches fire, 3 passengers hurt

MANILA, Philippines — A northbound MRT-3 train coach caught fire between the line’s Guadalupe and Buendia stations on Saturday evening.

In a statement, the Department of Transportation MRT-3 (DOTr-MRT-3) said the fire was first reported at around 9:12 p.m.

The fire was extinguished at around 9:51 p.m., according to a statement posted on Facebook by the MRT-3 management. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), however, said the fire was extinguished at out around 9:56 p.m.

“No casualties and major injuries reported as of writing,” the MRT-3 management posted on its Facebook page.

However, the MRT-3 management said three women sustained bruises in their legs after jumping off the coach to the mainline tracks.

MRT-3 Director for Operations Michael Capati said the train coach hit by the fire is old and has not undergone a general overhaul.

Capati added that they are still checking if it is safe to allow the MRT-3 to operate on Sunday. The cause of the fire, meanwhile, is still being investigated, Capati said.
