Robredo urged to run after 1Sambayan endorsement

MANILA, Philippines — After the opposition coalition 1Sambayan has officially nominated Vice President Leni Robredo as its presidential candidate in the 2022 National Elections, several personalities expressed hope that Robredo would now pursue the position.

One of which is lawyer Chel Diokno, who also earlier declared that he was vying to run for Senate in the upcoming elections.

“Walang ibang handang pamunuan tayo kundi si VP Leni. Hoping na handa ang united opposition para suportahan si VP if she decides to run,” Diokno said in a Facebook post

Veteran actress Agot Isidro, on the other hand, welcomed the 1Sambayan’s endorsement, calling it “today’s good news.”

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, meanwhile, who also earlier declared his presidential bid, welcomed the decision, reiterating that the Magdalo group will “fully support” her candidacy.

“Now that the 1Sambayan has endorsed VP Leni, we hope that she would be encouraged to finally decide and run for president,” said Trillanes.

“We, in the Magdalo group, have been consistent in urging her to run as we believe in her capacity to save the country from the mess duterte has put us into. If she decides to run, the Magdalo group would fully support her to ensure her win.”

Despite his presidential bid, Trillanes reiterated time and time again that he will rescind his candidacy if Robredo will run.

Other celebrities and supporters also expressed their support and hope that Robredo will pursue her candidacy.

Insurers for Leni, composed of agents and executives of life- and non-life insurance companies from all regions of the country, lauded 1Sambayan’s decision to endorse Robredo for president.

“Insurers for Leni joins all our fellow supporters in rejoicing over this welcome news on 1Sambayan’s nomination of Leni for President,” the group said on its Facebook page.

Dr. Gia Sison, convenor of Healthcare Workers for Leni, also called on Robredo to run for president in 2022.

“Tumakbo na po kayo Ma’am (Please run for President ma’am),” said Sison, who spearheads the group of more than 600 volunteers of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, medical technologists and other healthcare professionals backing VP Leni’s presidential bid.

Meanwhile singer and actor Kerwin King kept it simple with a tweet,  “Let Leni Lead.”

Mela Habijan, the first-ever Miss Trans Global, also expressed her support on her Instagram account, “Dahil keri ni Leni, let Leni lead!”

In a post by supporters’ group MindanaWon for Leni on its Facebook page, the group expressed full support for 1Sambayan’s endorsement of Robredo’s presidential run in 2022.

Retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio, convenor of 1Sambayan, on Thursday announced the endorsement of Robredo and former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV as presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the May 2022 polls following a rigorous selection process.

Robredo, however, has not yet released any decision on her political plans.

Prior to the announcement, Robredo has been urged to discuss matters with Senator Manny Pacquiao and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno to have more chances against candidates the administration will field.

“Sa mga susunod na araw, samahan ninyo akong magdasal pa, that our decision will be what is best for our country. Muli, maraming salamat sa inyong tiwala,” Robredo said.

(In the coming days, join me in praying more, that our decision will be what is best for our country. Again, thank you very much for your trust.)
