MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has condemned the throwing of a grenade at the ancestral home of Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, saying that they are alarmed over the threat an elected official received.
“The Commission on Human Rights strongly condemns the grenade throwing incident which happened at the residence of Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez in Cagayan de Oro this morning,” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Although no one was injured, the Commission expresses alarm over the threat against the personal safety and security of an elected official and his family in the most despicable manner,” she added.
According to CHR, even if there was no one harmed in the incident, the act violates the sense of peace that every individual should have.
“Apart from endangering the lives of residents, such violent incident desecrates the sense of peace and security that every individual has the right to enjoy within the safety of his/her/their own home,” De Guia noted.
“The CHR supports the plea of the family that justice must be served to hold perpetrators accountable from this act of cowardice and intimidation,” she added.
Earlier, Rodriguez himself confirmed that a grenade was found at the ancestral residence of the Rodriguez family in Barangay Nazareth, Cagayan de Oro.
“We condemn in the strongest terms this act of violence perpetuated by unknown men,” Rodriguez added.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident.
