CA panel recommends confirmation of retired SC Justice Mendoza as JBC member

MANILA, Philippines — The ad interim appointment of retired Supreme Court (SC) Justice Jose Mendoza as a member of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has been recommended for confirmation by a panel of the powerful Commission on Appointments (CA).

The CA’s Committee on Justice and Judicial and Bar Council approved the recommendation on Mendoza’s ad interim appointment as a JBC member representing retired justices of the SC in a hearing on Wednesday.

The panel’s recommendation would be transmitted for approval at the plenary.

Mendoza was first appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as a JBC member in 2017 where he served until July 9 this year.

He was then reappointed as a JBC member and he took his oath of office on July 20 this year.

He will serve as a JBC regular member and chairperson of the JBC executive committee for another term of four years or until July 9, 2025.

Mendoza served as a High Court magistrate from 2010 to 2017.

The JBC is constitutionally mandated to screen and vet nominees for the President for vacant posts in the judiciary and in the Offices of the Ombudsman and Deputy Ombudsman.
