10 more COVID-19 patients die in Quezon; death toll hits 1,040

LUCENA CITY––The COVID-19 death toll in Quezon province rose to 1,040, as 10 more patients died on Wednesday, according to the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO).

The latest fatalities come from Sariaya, Mauban, and Catanauan towns with two each; and Candelaria, Lopez, San Antonio, and Quezon towns with one each, the IPHO said in its 5 p.m. bulletin issued Sept. 8.

At least 84 patients died from Sept. 1 to Sept. 8, or 10 fatalities daily, the report shows.

In August, Quezon logged 193 COVID-19 deaths, the highest monthly fatality since the pandemic struck last year.

Lucena City, the Quezon capital that is under strict modified enhanced community quarantine, has the highest deaths at 164.

Quezon, which remains under general community quarantine with heightened restrictions, had been recording an upward trend in COVID-19 cases since March, which had 819 patients then.

New cases

On Wednesday, Sept. 8, the IPHO recorded 117 new COVID-19 cases and 228 new patients on Tuesday, the highest single-day tally since the pandemic began.

Last month, Quezon logged 3,192 COVID-19 cases, the highest monthly tally since March 2020.

In April, the IPHO recorded 2,345 COVID-19 cases; May, 2,413; June, 2,377, and July, 1,712.

For the first eight days of September this year, the IPHO recorded 1,343 new cases, or an average of 167 additional confirmed virus carriers a day.

The province has 2,165 active infections as of Sept. 8, from 705 on July 23.

Lucena City topped the list with 549 active virus carriers. There were only seven active cases in the city on March 7.

Delta variant

The Department of Health in Calabarzon said Quezon recorded 37 COVID-19 Delta variant cases as of Sept. 2.

The record showed that 16 of these patients have recovered, three died, while 16 others were being “verified.”

The two others were admitted to a medical facility.

Only the island town of Patnanungan out of the 41 localities in the province was COVID-19-free as of Sept. 8.

The 31 residents in the locality off the Pacific Ocean, who were previously infected, have recovered.
