Comelec opposes Sunday voter registration amid nearing deadline

MANILA, Philippines — Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez on Friday bucked calls to extend the voter registration period until Sunday as the September 30 deadline nears.

Jimenez pointed out that the poll body already opened the voter registration on Saturday and holidays.

“Right now, we are already giving six days a week,” Jimenez said during the launch of voter registration at SM Supermalls.

Comelec also extended the voter registration hours on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

The poll body also ruled out the extension of voter registration period beyond September 30, saying the voter registration target of four million new registrants has already been reached.

To date, there are now 61 million registered voters, according to Jimenez.
