MANILA, Philippines—Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct an investigation surrounding the death of Cebu-based lawyer Rex Jesus Mario Fernandez.
Fernandez was on his vehicle along Duterte Street when he was attacked by a gunman.
“The NBI, through Office-in-Charge Eric B. Distor, is hereby directed and granted authority to conduct its own investigation and case build-up on the killing of Atty. Rex Jesus Mario Fernandez,” read Guevarra’s Department Order (DO) released Friday.
“If evidence warrants, file the appropriate charges against all persons involved and found responsible for any unlawful act in connection therewith,” the DO signed by Guevarra further stated.
Guevarra also required the NBI to submit a progress report of the investigation directly to his office within 10 days and “periodically thereafter.”
