MANILA, Philippines — The country’s COVID-19 death toll is nearing the 30,000-mark as the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Tuesday 92 more fatalities due to coronavirus infections.
According to the DOH, the 29,220 deaths account for 1.74 percent of all the 1,676,156 total confirmed COVID-19 cases since the onset of the pandemic. Of the tally, 79,016 are active cases or those that have yet to recover.
Data from the DOH showed that of the active cases, 1.7 percent are severe while 1 percent is critical, occupying intensive care units in hospitals. The majority or 94.4 percent are mild, 1.7 percent are asymptomatic, and 1.18 percent are moderate cases.
Last week, the DOH’s epidemiology bureau said that deaths triggered by COVID-19 are declining.
Data from the unit on the date of actual deaths showed that an average of 133 patients died per day in April this year when the country saw a spike in cases. This figure then decreased to 117 fatalities daily in May, 95 in June, and 61 in July.
Per report date, or the date when the deaths were added to the tally, the DOH has so far reported an average of 133 deaths for the month of August.
