Russia’s Gamaleya applies for emergency use of single-dose COVID-19 vaccine

MANILA, Philippines — Russia’s vaccine maker Gamaleya Institute has applied for an emergency use authorization (EUA) for its single-dose vaccine, Sputnik Light, in the country, the Director-General Eric Domingo of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a taped briefing with President Rodrigo Duterte that aired on Monday.

“Sputnik Light actually also applied with us for a EUA, and our vaccine experts are studying it,” Domingo said in Filipino.

In May, Russia authorized the use of Gamaleya’s single-dose COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik Light, which is a human adenoviral vector platform that has a storage requirement of 2ºC to 8ºC.

According to the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Sputnik Light has an efficacy of 79.4%.

The Philippines has so far only approved one single-dose COVID-19 vaccine, which is Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.
