Two brothers were killed while conducting a memorial for another brother who was fatally struck by a train at the same spot a week earlier in North Carolina in the United States.

Pablo Tiquiram Us, 29, and Jose Tiquiram Us, 20, were walking north on the southbound tracks in Charlotte at around 5 a.m. on Aug. 3 when they were hit by a train, as per Fox affiliate WJZY the next day.

Police said the brothers had been conducting a memorial for their brother, 27-year-old Baltazar Us, who was killed in the same location by a train. Baltazar was reportedly driving around the crossing arms when he was struck by a LYNX Blue Line train.

Both Pablo and Jose were declared dead at the scene by paramedics, according to the report. The conductor of the train stopped after the two were hit.

Police suspected that impairment was a factor in the two brothers’ being fatally struck by a train.

“It’s a very tragic incident,” police sergeant Adam Jones was quoted as saying. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families. I can’t imagine losing your children, your siblings within a week to such tragic circumstances.”

Authorities noted that the safety mechanisms for the Charlotte Area Transit System line were working properly when the accident happened, according to the report. Ian Biong /ra
