A 16-year-old male killed himself after accidentally shooting his mother while he was handling a gun in the living room of their home in Oklahoma in the United States.

The shooting occurred just before midnight on July 31 in Del City, as per KFOR on Aug. 2. Police responded to reports of the shooting and found the teenager lying on the street.

The teen had a gunshot wound to the head and a firearm next to his body. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but later died of his wound.

Police, meanwhile, found the mother in the kitchen also with a gunshot wound also to the head, according to the report.

Del City police major Bradley Rule described the shooting as “tragic,” noting that “it boils down to an accidental shooting.”

“The bullet went through the wall separating the living room from the kitchen, and went all the way through the wall and struck his mother in the head, killing her,” he was quoted as saying.

Witnesses told police that the teenager was in the living room handling the gun when it went off, sending the bullet through the wall separating the living room and kitchen. The mother was then struck in the head.

“To be handling this firearm and then it goes off, I’m sure that was terrifying in and of itself. But then to go around the corner and see the result of it, shooting your own mother, I can’t imagine what he felt,” Rule was quoted as saying.

Witnesses recalled the distraught teenager running outside after the accident, then shooting himself in the head.

Rule noted, however, that police were still investigating the case just to make sure “there’s nothing going on we don’t know about.” Ian Biong /ra
