Student loses P160K in condo burglary

A MEDICAL student of the University of Santo Tomas said she lost close to P160,000 in cash and valuables in a condominium burglary in Manila on Wednesday. In a report to the police on Thursday, Karla Punsalan, 22, said her unit at Tower 2 of Avida Towers on San Lazaro Street in Sta. Cruz was ransacked while she was out between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. the previous day. Stolen were P51,000 in cash, a laptop computer worth P90,000, an iPod worth P10,000, a mobile phone costing P5,000, and a broadband device worth P1,300. Jeannette I. Andrade

Rites set for Battle of Manila victims

MEMORARE-Manila will hold on Saturday, Feb. 18, a commemoration of the 1945 Liberation of Manila in memory of the 100,000 noncombatant victims of the World War II battle.  The event will start at 8:30 a.m. at the Memorare-Manila monument on Calle General Luna corner Cabildo streets in Intramuros. Floral wreaths from Memorare, Manila City Hall, Intramuros Administration (IA) and Bridge for Peace will be offered. A survivor, Justo Ortiz, will deliver the invocation. Also delivering messages are Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Memorare president and Ambassador Juan Jose P. Rocha, and the main speaker, IA Administrator Jose Capistrano. Memorare director and historian, Dr. Ricardo T. Jose, an expert on Philippine-Japan relations and World War II, will close the ceremony.

Dr. Isabel Malvar Villegas; 102

DR. ISABEL Malvar Villegas died on Feb. 15, 2012, at the age of 102. She is survived by three sons, three daughters, in-laws, 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Villegas is the last direct descendant of national hero Gen. Miguel Malvar, the last Filipino general to surrender to the American forces during the 1898-1902 Philippine-American War and the 2nd Supreme Commander of the First Philippine Republic in 1896. Her remains lie in state at the ancestral home in Sto. Tomas, Batangas. Interment will be on Sunday, Feb. 19, at Sto. Tomas public cemetery after a 12 noon funeral Mass.
