MANILA, Philippines — A confederation of poultry raisers said the importation of frozen meat is causing “damage” to the local livelihood.

The United Broiler Raisers Association (Ubra) President Elias Jose Inciong said this is because the local raisers could not compete with the cheaper imported pork and chicken.

“Napipinsala po kami, baboy man yan o manok, kapag tinutulungan ang importasyon ng baboy, apektado lahat ‘yan,” Incong was quoted as saying in a Radyo Inquirer report.

(Our industry is damaged, the pork and chicken raisers, when the pork importers have an advantage, all of the industries are affected.)

Department of Agriculture (DA) chief William Dar recently led the launch of a pop-up store in Marikina Riverbanks Center which provides cheaper and imported meat products.

During the event, Dar said that the importation of frozen meat, which is only a temporary measure, was done to provide cheaper prices to consumers.

“Gusto kong ipaalam sa madla na sa lahat po ng tiempo ay nandyan ang gobyerno na tinitignan palagi na mayroong sapat na pagkain ang bansa,” Dar said during the event.

(I want to inform everyone that these measures are being done to make sure that there is enough food in the country.)
