MANILA, Philippines — Malabon City has recorded four cases of COVID-19 Delta variant, the city’s Public Information Office (PIO) said on Monday.

“Meron po, ang nakalista po dito sa amin apat po eh,  pero ‘yun pong dalawa, ano na po, nagamot na, dalawa na lamang po,” Malabon PIO chief Bong Padua said on Teleradyo.

To prevent the spread of Delta variant in the city, Padua said the city has vaccinated 178,000 individuals, 75,000 of whom received their second dose.

Malabon needs to vaccinate around 280,000 residents to achieve “herd immunity,” according to Padua.

The city has a total of 14,238 cases including 461 active cases, 13,312 recoveries and 465 deaths.

Malabon City is also among the 13 cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) classified as “high risk areas,” according to OCTA Research Group’s report on Sunday.

OCTA also noted a “serious surge” in NCR after it recorded 1,740 new cases of COVID-19 as of July 31 alone, the highest number of cases the region has reported since May 10.

“The rapid growth rate suggests the possibility of community transmission of the Delta variant in the NCR,” OCTA warned.
