Southern Leyte segment of Maharlika Highway blocked by landslide

MAASIN CITY, Philippines – A section of the Maharlika highway in the municipality of Sogod, Southern Leyte, was impassable early Thursday morning following a landslide on Mt. Panjongon triggered by continuous heavy rain.

Manolo Rojas, assistant district engineer of the Department of Public Works and Highways at the Southern Leyte Engineering District, said that the landslide occurred on the highway in the village of Kahupian at around 5:45 a.m. Thursday.

Rojas said heavy equipment was deployed to the area to clear the road, which is near the Agas-agas Bridge.

Southern Leyte has been experiencing incessant heavy rains the past four days.

The Maharlika Highway is a major route going to and from Mindanao and Luzon.
