MANILA, Philippines — An independent pandemic monitor on Wednesday said it recorded a “significant increase” in fresh daily cases of COVID-19 in the cities of Manila, Makati, Laoag, and Baguio.
According to OCTA Research’s latest data, Manila City increased its daily average of new cases to 109 from 82; Makati City, from 55 to 74; Baguio, from 49 to 64; and Laoag, from 31 to 55.
OCTA’s data likewise indicated that Davao City is still leading as the local government unit with the most daily average of new COVID-19 cases at 218, even if this tally decreased from the past week’s 233.
Very high infection rates were also recorded in Cebu City (1.48), Laoag (2.16), and Lapu Lapu (1.53) while high levels of infection rates were recorded in Manila, Makati, Baguio, Taguig, and Mariveles.
Laoag and Mariveles currently have the highest incident rates at 47.87 and 28.53, respectively.
In terms of intensive care units utilization rate, very high levels were recorded in Davao City (91 percent), Iloilo City (99 percent), and Taguig City (92 percent).
Local government units currently categorized as “high-risk areas” include Davao City, Cebu City, Iloilo, Bacolod, Makati, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Baguio, Taguig, Laoag, and Mariveles.
The Department of Health on Wednesday reported another increase in the nationwide COVID-19 case count to 1,524,449, as 6,560 more people contract the potentially deadly illness caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Active cases in the Philippines were at 47,996 as of July 21.
