/ 11:52 AM February 15, 2012

WASHINGTON—US President Barack Obama on Tuesday took to Twitter to offer his wife Michelle a public Valentine’s Day greeting, and told America’s men to “go big” with gifts for their sweethearts.

Obama made a rare personal tweet – signed with his initials “- bo” wishing his wife of 19 years “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

Earlier, the US leader had started an event at the White House designed to urge Congress to pass an extension of a payroll tax cut, to offer advice on the best way to approach the romantic minefields of Valentine’s Day.

“Let me start with a quick public service announcement for all the gentlemen out there – today is Valentine’s Day,” Obama said.

“Do not forget. I speak from experience here. It is important that you remember this. And go big – that’s my advice.”
