TUGUEGARAO CITY—A 16-year-old boy died and 12 others were injured when a jeepney carrying them fell into a 5-meter ravine in Tanudan town, Kalinga province on Monday (July 5), police said.

Investigators identified the fatality as Jandy Gallamoy, a resident of Barangay Dupligan in Tanudan.

He was declared dead on arrival at the Kalinga Provincial Hospital, according to Lt. Florand Sim, officer-in-charge of Tanudan police.

Injured were Luz Bakasi, 35; Shanica Carbonel, 9; Emalyn Batang-ay, 18; Geraldine Carbonel, 36; Shania Keith Carbonel, 9; Mariel Samoy, 21; Marquin Kibang, 3; Meah Fe Manggat, 18; Anacita Ang-Ang, 77; Claudine Gallamoy, 21; Shyleen Kyrie Carbonel, 4; and Frank Magalim, 15, all of Tanudan.

The victims were taken to the Kalinga Provincial Hospital and Almora General Hospital for treatment.

Police said the jeepney’s brakes malfunctioned while negotiating a steep portion of the Tanudan-Banaue national road at Sitio Maraggob in Dupligan, causing it to fall into the ravine.
