MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Guillermo Eleazar has dismissed two police corporals linked to the death of a fellow police officer in Quezon City.
Eleazar dismissed Police Corporal Sherwin Rebot and Police Corporal Harold Mendoza who initially claimed that Police Corporal Higino Wayan shot himself during a drinking binge.
However, following further investigation by the Quezon City Police District’s (QCPD) Crime Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU), driver Lorenzo Lapay, who was also drinking with the policemen, eventually confessed that Rebot allegedly shot Wayan.
“Ang pagkakasibak sa serbisyo ng dalawang pulis na ito ay patunay na papanagutin natin ang sinumang pulis na lumabag sa batas,” Eleazar said in a statement.
(The dismissal of the two policemen is proof that we will hold police officers accountable when they violate the law.)
“May this serve as a warning to all police officers that I will not let this kind of incident pass. Dahil lang sa pagsuway sa patakaran na bawal uminom habang naka-duty, humantong ito sa pagpatay ng inyong kabaro,” he added.
(By violating a law banning drinking alcohol while on duty, it led to killing a fellow policeman.)
Eleazar said Rebot is guilty of Grave Misconduct (murder), Violation of Presidential Decree 1829 (Obstruction of Justice), Simple Irregularity in the Performance of Duty (loafing), Less Grave Neglect of Duty (drinking while on duty) and Conduct Unbecoming of a Police Officer.
Meanwhile, Eleazar said Mendoza is also found guilty of Less Grave Neglect of Duty (drinking while on duty), Simple Irregularity in the Performance of Duty (loafing) and Conduct Unbecoming of a Police Officer.
