SAN MARIANO, Isabela–Nine people were arrested when police raided a place where an alleged illegal cockfighting was held on Sunday (June 20) afternoon.
But the police operation led to a shootout when one of the suspects fired shots, leaving one of them wounded.
Lt. Julius Telan, San Mariano deputy police chief, said they discovered the illegal gambling based on a tip from the villagers.
Telan said one of the men at the site sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder during the shootout while 20 others managed to escape.
Seized during the operation were eight fighting cocks, P5,016 bet money, 17 gaffs and six motorcycles.
