MANILA, Philippines— Davao del Sur Governor Douglas Cagas passed away Thursday due to COVID-19 complications, his family announced. He was 77.
“It is with our deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Governor Douglas ‘Dodo’ Cagas this morning, owing to COVID complications. He has joined his Creator in Heaven,” his niece, Ria Fe Cagas Fernandez, posted on Facebook.
Cagas served as a congressman from 1998 to 2007, and as a governor of the city in 2007-2013, and 2016-2019, and 2019 up to present, according to the local government’s website.
The governor is survived by his wife, Davao del Sur Representative Mercedes Chan Cagas, and son, former Davao del Sur congressman and Vice Governor Marc Douglas IV.
“He was a great man and we were blessed to have had him,” Fernandez said in another post. “Thank you Tito Dodo, for being the strong uncle I looked up to and loved, and for your enduring legacy that is Davao del Sur.”
