OLONGAPO CITY –– The city government launched Tuesday its 911 emergency hotline during its 55th cityhood anniversary.

Mayor Rolen Paulino Jr. said the system was tested and fine-tuned while essential personnel were trained according to the 911 system in the U.S.

He said the city handled the calls made via the 911 system in Metro Manila when it bogged down recently.

“I’m proud that we are more than capable [to carry out] this system. This is another achievement for the city,” Paulino said in a statement.

He added: “Now Olongapeños will just have to remember 911 and not every hotline number for emergencies, such as fire, accidents, or medical emergencies.”

The office of the city disaster and management office headed by Angie Layug handles the 911 system.

“Our command center is composed of our rescue personnel, the police, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and the barangays. This will allow easy access to our personnel and assets can be deployed immediately,” Paulino said.

But Paulino called on residents to use the hotline for emergencies only.

“I am very happy and proud that Olongapo is one of the few local government units with this kind of system. It is a big help for our residents,” the mayor said.

Olongapo City is a Gawad Kalasag Hall of Fame awardee for its standout rescue personnel. The award is an annual recognition by the National Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Council.
