COVID-19 active cases dip below 50K with 6,666 recoveries

MANILA, Philippines — The number of active cases in the country dipped below 50,000 after the Department of Health (DOH) logged 6,666 recoveries on Monday.

In its daily case bulletin, DOH said the active cases in the country as of May 24 is at 48,917.

This is even after the health department logged 4,973 additional infections.

There were also 39 new fatalities.

All in all, the country’s total COVID-19 case count is at 1,184,706, including 48,917 active cases, 1,115,806 recoveries and 19,933 deaths.

DOH said it removed 21 duplicates from the total count, which include 18 recoveries.

There were also 58 cases that were “deactivated” after being tagged as duplicates, which include 50 recoveries and seven deaths.

Moreover, 18 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.

DOH said all laboratories were operational on May 22 but six laboratories were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 document repository system.

Active coronavirus cases last dipped below the 50,000 mark on May 19, but figures went up again the next day.

On March 11, COVID-19 cases began to spiral to 47,769 infections in the wake of coronavirus variants that contributed to the surge of cases in the country.
