PH COVID-19 deaths increase to 19,641 with 135 new fatalities

MANILA, Philippines — The country’s total number of COVID-19 deaths rose to 19,641 on Thursday as the Department of Health (DOH) reported 135 new fatalities.

The DOH’s latest case bulletin showed that the deaths compose 1.69 percent of all the 1,165,155 confirmed cases in the country. Of this total, 4.5 percent are active cases while 93.9 percent are recoveries.

Based on previous case bulletins of the DOH, the country logged a total of 823 deaths from May 14 to 20, or an average of 117 deaths added to the count per day.

Meanwhile, a total of 832 deaths were reported from May 7 to 13, or an average of 118 deaths tallied per day.

Of the current 51,912 active cases of COVID-19, 93.1 percent have mild infections, 2.1 percent are asymptomatic, 1.31 percent are moderate cases, 2 percent are severe, and 1.5 percent are critical cases.

Despite the still high number of COVID-19 cases, Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe, country representative of the World Health Organization, previously cited the Philippines for preventing a much higher number of deaths like those seen in other countries.
