A bride ended up marrying a wedding guest after her groom suddenly disappeared from the ceremony in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.

The bride tied the knot with one of the baraatis, a member of the marriage party from the groom’s side, in the city of Kanpur on May 16, as per IANS via Khaleej Times on May 18.

The would-be couple had already gone through the exhange of garlands ceremony – called “jamaila” – when the groom went missing.

The bride’s family concluded after searching, however, that the groom did not just disappear, but intentionally fled the scene. One of the guests then suggested that the wedding should push through with one of the baraatis as the new groom, according to the report.

The bride’s family then chose a suitable groom, whose family also agreed to marrying him off to the bride. While the wedding still ended with a solemnization, the bride’s family expectedly lodged a complaint against the groom and his family.

An inspector, meanwhile, noted that the groom’s family also filed a complaint where the father asked police for help in finding his missing son, according to the report.

As bizarre as it is, this is not the first case of such an incident happening in India. Back in January, another bride married a guest after her groom likewise fled the wedding ceremony, as per The Times of India on Jan. 7.

In another case back in 2015, an Indian bride also switched grooms last minute after the groom suffered from an epileptic seizure during the ceremony. She was angry because the groom apparently lied about being epileptic, the same outlet reported on Feb. 18, 2015. Ian Biong /ra
