A 76-year-old woman in India, who was believed to have died due to COVID-19, gave her relatives quite a scare when she suddenly woke up minutes before her cremation.

Shakuntala Gaikwad initially self-isolated at home after learning she had COVID-19. But she later had to be rushed by her relatives to the city on May 10 because of her worsening COVID-19 symptoms, as per Indian newspaper Khaleej Times yesterday, May 15.

Gaikwad and her family reportedly took a private vehicle to different hospitals in hopes of finding a vacant hospital bed for her. In the middle of their search, the old woman suddenly went unconscious and did not respond when family members tried to revive her.

This led her relatives to conclude that she had passed away and brought her home to prepare for her cremation. They announced Gaikwad’s death and informed other family members about her funeral in their village at Mudhale, India Today stated in a report on the same day.

The woman was placed in a coffin and her family prepared to light a fire for her cremation rites when she suddenly started crying and opened her eyes. She was brought to a hospital and is now receiving further treatment and tests. Dana Cruz/JB
