MANILA, Philippines — The number of total active COVID-19 cases in the country is now at 58,986 as the Department of Health (DOH) reports 6,784 new infections.

The DOH’s case bulletin on Friday showed that the country has so far confirmed a total of 1,131,467 COVID-19 cases.

Of this figure, 93.1 percent or 1,053,523 cases are recoveries, while 1.68 percent or 18,958 are deaths.

The DOH said there are 2,972 recoveries and 137 deaths reported on Friday.

Active cases represent only 5.2 percent of the tally. Of the active cases, 95.8 percent are mild and asymptomatic.

Meanwhile, 13.1 percent of the 46,034 individuals who were recently tested were found positive for the virus.

According to the health department, 41 duplicates, including 21 recoveries, were removed from the case count, while 71 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths following validation.

All laboratories were operational on May 12 while five laboratories were not able to submit their data.

Malacañang announced on Thursday that the quarantine status in the NCR Plus, covering Metro Manila and the nearby provinces of Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite, and Laguna will be downgraded to a general community quarantine “with heightened restrictions” as the number of new cases being reported by the DOH slows down.
